Bio
Elizabeth (Liz) Rennie is a mixed media painter and UX designer based in her hometown of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Her work explores the emotional resonance of color, material, and physical space as a form of visual storytelling, often reflecting themes of memory, place, and personal history.
Liz earned her BFA in Graphic Design from Suffolk University and her MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University. She actively exhibits throughout the Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley regions, with recent shows at Elevated Thought, the Scollay Square Gallery at Boston City Hall, and Gallery RAG. Her work has received several honors, including a Juror’s Choice Award from the Cambridge Art Association and a 3rd Place Prize at the Brookline Arts Center’s ART Off the Wall exhibition.
Deeply connected to her local community, Liz regularly participates in Lawrence’s growing arts scene, including facilitating workshops and contributing to public-facing projects.
Outside of the studio, Liz enjoys collecting vinyl, listening to DIY punk, and seeking out burritos and strong, iced coffees.
Artist Statement
My mixed media painting practice explores the complex relationships between body, mind, and physical spaces. More specifically, my work enables me to confront my struggles with Panic Disorder – a condition in which one structures their life in particular ways to mitigate a constant state of panic and anxiety. Turmoil and instability are focal points of my private and public life, thus prompting me to reflect on how I use my artistic practice to impose order on an otherwise disordered world.
Employing various everyday materials and vibrant pigments, I construct large-scale installations, assemblages, and collages that occupy exterior spaces and represent internal conflict. In doing so, I explore different ways to represent and structure my lived experiences. By utilizing physical spaces – such as domestic environments – as the context for my work, I evoke the conflicting sense of order and disorder that I experience daily, creating works and spaces that evoke a sense of tension and discomfort that can arise when our bodies and minds are at odds with our ourselves and our surroundings.
