Elizabeth (Liz) Rennie is an emerging mixed media painter and UX designer based in her hometown Lawrence, Massachusetts. Focusing on the documentation of human experiences and emotions, her work allows her to explore the relationships between color, material, and physical environments.
Liz attended Suffolk University, receiving a BFA in Graphic Design, and recently received her MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University. She currently exhibits her work in local galleries in the Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley area and actively participates in Lawrence’s artistic community. Her work is the recipient of awards in exhibitions including the 2021 ART Off the Wall by the Brookline Arts Center and the 2021 Emerging Artists Exhibition by the Cambridge Arts Association.
While art-making is the focal point of Liz’s interests, in her spare time she also enjoys collecting vinyl’s, listening to DIY punk bands, and overindulging in coffee and burritos.
My mixed media painting practice explores the complex relationships between body, mind, and physical spaces. More specifically, my work enables me to confront my struggles with Panic Disorder – a condition in which one structures their life in particular ways to mitigate a constant state of panic and anxiety. Turmoil and instability are focal points of my private and public life, thus prompting me to reflect on how I use my artistic practice to impose order on an otherwise disordered world.
Employing various everyday materials and vibrant pigments, I construct large-scale installations and assemblages that occupy interior spaces. In doing so, I explore different ways to represent and structure my lived experiences. By utilizing physical spaces – such as domestic environments – as the context for my work, I evoke the conflicting sense of order and disorder that I experience daily, creating works and spaces that evoke a sense of tension and discomfort that can arise when our bodies and minds are at odds with our ourselves and our surroundings.
