Elizabeth (Liz) Rennie is an emerging mixed media painter and UX designer based in her hometown Lawrence, Massachusetts. Focusing on the documentation of human experiences and emotions, her body of work allows her to explore the relationships between color, material, space, and typography.
Liz attended Suffolk University, receiving a BFA in Graphic Design (2016), and is pursuing an MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University. She currently exhibits her work in local galleries in the Greater Boston and Merrimack Valley area and actively participates in Lawrence’s artistic community. Her work is the recipient of awards in exhibitions including the 2021 ART Off the Wall by the Brookline Arts Center and the 2021 Emerging Artists Exhibition by the Cambridge Arts Association.
While art-making is the focal point of Liz’s interests, in her spare time she also enjoys collecting vinyl’s, listening to DIY punk bands, and overindulging in coffee and burritos.
My mixed media painting practice explores everyday human experiences and emotions, particularly within matters of identity and mental health. Regularly, whether due to matters associated with my biracial background, struggles with mental health, or my social and economic upbringing, I have experienced feelings of displacement and otherness that I strive to piece together in my works. Through an assortment of materials and media – paint, cardboard, shower rods, t-shirts, windows – I discover different means to reconstruct and convey my understanding of my lived experiences. The distinctive textures, shapes, and marks all work together to create one interconnected reality. I interpret these materials and structures as instances of real life, whether literally or figuratively, creating a moment that can be entered, experienced and effortlessly digestible to the individual viewer. These works take on their own level of meaning and associations for the spectator, further adding to the depth and layers of personal narrative.
