This exhibition is inspired by the practice of adapting + expanding at will, and the process of actively inventing and re-inventing our own identities in relationship to our environments. “Shapeshifting” can serve as a means of protection, especially when our existence is misunderstood or threatened, but it can also be a method for creating the possibility for self-actualization in spite of the mold or standard that might exist.

“An alternative, a pause, a space to breathe.
A moment to step back, to untangle the knots.
The weight feels endless, and the cracks start to show.
Deciding to heal, to move forward, to rebuild.”

Alternative 19.33.1.01.25 explores shapeshifting as an act of self-preservation and renewal. Through a constructed environment of painted surfaces, salvaged furniture, layered fabrics, and architectural fragments, the installation offers a moment of pause—a space to step outside rigid expectations and reimagine identity on one’s own terms.

In this evolving, hybrid space, fractures and imperfections are not hidden but embraced, acknowledging the realities of struggle while opening pathways toward healing and reinvention. Color fields, textures, and domestic forms converge and separate, reflecting the fluid, adaptable nature of selfhood in constant negotiation with its environment.

As part of Shapeshifter//everything is me, this work frames transformation not as an escape, but as a powerful means of self-actualization and belonging, even within fractured or shifting landscapes.

Abstract Workshop

A community workshop presented in dialogue with shapeshifter // everything is me

Flyer for Liz Rennie’s abstract art workshop hosted by Elevated Thought in Lawrence, MA on February 28th. Includes time, location (15 Union Street, Suite #120), and a QR code to register. Background features layered fabric textures in red and blue tones.

This 2.5–3 hour workshop invited participants to explore personal identity through reflective writing and abstract collage. The session began with a freeform one-page writing exercise, which served as the foundation for visual exploration. Participants identified key emotions, symbols, and themes from their writing and translated them into visual language through intuitive sketching and note-taking.

They then created abstract collages using a variety of materials and techniques—cutting, layering, obscuring, and blending elements to express transformation, memory, and internal landscapes. Emphasis was placed on experimentation and letting go of literal representation in favor of texture, emotion, and form.

The workshop concluded with a reflection and optional sharing, allowing participants to articulate their process, insights, and discoveries. Through this layered approach, the workshop fostered emotional expression, personal insight, and a deeper connection between writing and visual storytelling.
